My Experience with Price Matching at HyVee!

Yesterday I gave you all the details on HyVee's new price matching program. I never want to recommend that you do things, which I have not done myself. So.....

I gave HyVee's Price Matching Program A Test Run

As I entered, I immediately noticed a huge, colorful sign hanging from the ceiling, proudly proclaiming that they price match!

The first thing to catch my ten year old's attention was the small table with a large urn of free hot cocoa! Nice! What a perk on a cold, dreary winter day!

It was good, too! They even thought to include a bowl of mini marshmallows with a spoon, so you could top your cocoa off with marshmallows. I mentally crossed "mid afternoon snack" off of my to-do list and let my boys fill their cups. Way to go, Hyvee! Thanks!

Here's another reminder for those shopping with kids. HyVee has a display at the edge of the produce section with healthy fruit in it just for those age 12 and under. It's clearly labelled. I always let my 10 year old take a banana, apple, or orange. There is bottled water on the display, too.

How I Planned My Price Match Adventure

1.  Before leaving home, I consulted the weekly sales flyers. If you live in Peoria, the Journal Star will send these directly to your home in a special pack, even if you are not subscribers. We are not.You need to have the physical store flyer in your hand for HyVee to price match items.

2.  For my initial foray into price matching, I wanted to pick items which met these criteria.
  • It should be an item which we would normally buy.
  • It should be an item which did not have any special conditions attached to it. So, nothing which was offered at a special price when you purchased 5 of the same item.
  • It should be an item which would not be difficult to find an identical match on HyVee's shelves.
3.  My final list was a nice mixture of items on sale this week at HyVee and those which I wanted to have price matched.

How did HyVee do?

As I placed my items on the conveyor belt, I separated my purchases, placing the items which I wanted to have price matched at the back. I told the clerk right away that I some items, which I intended to have price matched. We worked our way through the regular priced items first. I had my competitor sales flyers all ready to use. I had circled the items which were being price matched in red ink to make them easy to see.

The sales clerk called over a supervisor. He needed some help changing the totals to represent the reduced prices of the price matched items. Although the supervisor was very aware of all the details the price match program, the young clerk did not know that HyVee price matched. However, the apologetic clerk was still very cheerful and watched to learn the procedure.

Since HyVee has just begun advertising this policy, there are bound to be a few bumps along the way. But, HyVee is working hard to insure that all the clerks know about the program and how the price matching works.

My first HyVee price matching shopping trip was absolutely a success and I'll be doing it again very soon. I give their store and employees both top marks!

How much money did I save? Let's take a look!

My Shopping Haul

I got all of this for $25.30!

I'll go through each item, show you which ones were price matched, and then tell you how much I saved with HyVee price matching.

HyVee Sale items:

4 bunches of broccoli at 99¢ each!  *There is a big batch of potato broccoli soup in my weekend plans!

If you are a fan of broccoli, then this is the week to visit HyVee! They have it on sale for just $.99 a bunch. As I made my way to the vegetable aisle, I noticed that there were very little broccoli left. But, overhearing my dismay, a very nice produce employee said that he was just getting ready to restock. He immediately left what he was doing, unpacked the broccoli, and made sure that I got my pick of the bunch.

He then asked if I needed help finding anything else. Yep! I needed fresh pineapple. He took me right to the display to insure that I found what I needed. This is not the first time that the helpful, friendly attitude of HyVee employees and their drive for top notch customer service has impressed me.

4 - Yoplait yogurt - 39¢ each - on sale. I let the kids pick from all the yummy flavors
1 Dozen large Eggs - 77¢ - Look for the coupon in this week's sales flyer. There's always a stack of flyers at the front of the store if you don't have one.

A trio of cheeses from the marked down cheese area. These averaged just $1.50 each! Dan declared the apple cinnamon perfect, while Philip preferred the tomato basil. We haven't opened the blueberry cobbler yet. But, we know we'll like it since we have bought it from HyVee in the past.

Price Matched Items

Each of these items was price matched from either Aldi or Save-a-Lot grocery store flyers.

Save-a-Lot Price Matched Items:

Pineapples - $1.29 each - SAVINGS: $2.42
Avocados - $.39 each - SAVINGS: $1.80
3 pound bag of yellow onions - $1.69 each - SAVINGS: $1.60

Aldi Price Matched Items:

Halos - mandarin oranges - 3 pound bags - $1.99 each - SAVINGS: $9.00

TOTAL PRICE MATCH SAVINGS: $14.82

How did I do?

The regular price without discounts would have been: $40.27
The price with the price match prices was:                    $25.30

So, my percentage of savings with the price match was:  37%

That's some pretty impressive savings! Plus, it's a major time savings to head to just one store instead of three!

Your turn!

Have you price matched at any stores in your area? What has been your experience? Would you do it again? Leave your thoughts in the comments section.
