This week's best buys is actually a tour of three area stores. Sometimes you just have to shop around to cherry pick the best bargains. The best part is that all three of these stores are within 1/4 mile of one another!
Store #1: Kroger
This trip was a combination of sale items, $5 off 5, and store markdowns.
$5 off 5 Sale!
There are some in my family who prefer Blue Diamond almond milk to every other milk alternative. But, it's also one of the most expensive brands. So, when Kroger offered it this week at $1.99 per half gallon, I got it! This was part of their ever popular $5 off 5 items event. You can mix and match the special sale items in increments of 5, but the milk was really all I wanted. So, I got 5 of them.
Markdowns!
Stir Fry Kits - half price: $1.49 for the small ones and $2.49 for the large one.
These stir-fry kits are not only yummy, they are also a great time-saver. At half price, they are a terrific bargain. If you don't want to use the sauce packet, just cook up the stir-fry veggies and throw it over brown rice for a quick and healthy supper.
Siggis Yogurt - $.25 each!
I could not believe the price of this yogurt! It was priced substantially cheaper than the rest of the markdown yogurts. There were just three on the shelf for $.25 each! I bought them all.
Ghirardelli bittersweet dark chocolate chips - 20 oz: $2.49
This 20 oz. bag of Ghirardelli dark chocolate chips was originally nearly $5, but it was just $2.49 in the general merchandise markdown aisle!
From the Sales Flyer!
Five pounds of red grapefruit: $2.99!
You'll find the best prices on citrus fruit in January and February, when the new crop comes in from Florida and California.
Total spent at Kroger: $22.06
Store #2: GFS
Tortilla chips - large bag: $2.50
The tortilla chips were listed as salted, but a serving of chips just contains 90 mg of sodium. So, they fall well within an appropriate range of salt. They were competitively priced at $2.50.
Bananas - 3 bunches: $.75 each
This is another case of "don't be afraid to ask". As you can see, one bunch had a bright green markdown price on it. The other two bunches were similarly speckled, but were not marked down. So, I asked nicely and the clerk gladly marked the other two bunches down to $.75 each also. Remember, if you find bananas at a great deal, they can be peeled and frozen for later use in smoothies or baked goods.
5 pound bags of lentils: $3.99 each!
This is an amazing price and we eat a LOT of lentils at my house! I got the last case that they had on the shelf - six bags! So, that was 30 pounds of lentils for just under $25.00! Great deal!
Total spent at GFS: $28.98
Store #3: HyVee
5# boxes of mandarins: $2.99 each!
Once again, this is a terrific example of outstanding January citrus prices! These are on sale at HyVee all week long. I got two bags.
Bigelow Christmas Blend tea: $1.00!
This was in the markdown cart. Remember that Christmas savings have reached the apex. Prices have dropped all over town to 70-90% off! This includes not only Holiday themed clothing, but also decorations, napkins, housewares, and food. Be sure to check every store you walk into in the next week to find amazing super clearance savings.
Total spent at HyVee: $7.05
Grand Total on this shopping trip: $58.09!
Tell us about your grocery store victories in the comment section. I'd also love to know about your Christmas clearance finds!
I will admit that I haven't really been shopping the Christmas clearance this year. I really have all that I need for now. So, there's something to be said for not spending money that you don't need to spend. But, I would love to give you a virtual high-five to help celebrate your great clearance deals!
