Check Out My $23.00 Kroger Haul!

Tonight's Kroger haul is a great example of the power of loss leader shopping. Loss leaders are special items offered by stores each week at a loss to the store. So, they sell a couple of things for well under market value in order to get more customers physically into the store. Let me show you each item and explain my savings strategy.

Traditional Loss-Leader Items

These grapes are in the store flyer this week on the front page. Traditionally, this is where loss leader items appear. There are no special conditions, no coupons, no hoops to jump through. You just show up and buy the items for the extra-low advertised price.

Buy as many of these items as you can safely use, store, or freeze for later use. As long as your monthly grocery budget can absorb the cost, then go for it!

SPECIAL SAVINGS TIP!  I generally set aside part of my grocery budget specifically for stocking up on extra low priced items.

$5/5 Loss Leader Items

I have begun including these sales in my "loss leader" inventory. A few years ago, stores began to switch to this strategy to entice more shoppers. It's really a fancy way of incorporating more loss leader items in the weekly flyer. However, unlike traditional loss leaders, you must purchase a certain quantity to qualify for the discount. It's more to keep track of, but I still like them.

  • You CAN combine extra store and manufacturer coupons with these items.
  • You MUST buy in multiples of 5 to get the discount.
  • You MUST buy the exact product with the correct SKEW numbers found in the ad to qualify.

FREE with Kroger Mailer Coupons

When you sign up for a store loyalty card, the grocer will thank you by sending coupons periodically for products which you frequently purchase. Kroger send theirs about once every six weeks. When you get them, you'll generally find two coupons for absolutely free products. This peanut butter was purchased with one of those coupons, which I received in the mail this week.

This two pound bag of sugar snap peas was marked half price and was in the regular produce section.
