Goodwill Discounts!

 My recent thoughts on Goodwill:

I have been among the masses complaining that Goodwill's prices have gotten too high.  I do like that our stores have a new boutique section of higher quality merchandise.  But, as others have noted, the prices on some items have seemingly soared in recent years. A couple of years ago, I thought my jaw was going to hit the floor when I found the perfect pair of little  size 5T corduroy pants for my son only to see a price tag of $12.99 on them!  Although they were in very good condition, they weren't new with the tags! I put them back on the rack!

In response, I began to shop at other local thrift stores where the selection was good and the price tags were lower.  I had begun regarding Goodwill as a "store of last resort".  But, all that may be changing!

I found out some exciting things about Goodwill stores that I never knew this week!  I did some digging and discovered a list of discounts you'll find at most Goodwill locations.  I've noticed that although Goodwill is a national organization, their stores seem to operate a little autonomously.  So, the sales and discounts at one store may not be consistent across the nation. Call ahead or check with your location in person to find out their policies and discounts.  Goodwill is certainly worth a look in your quest to live frugally.

Color or Department of the Week

Goodwill stores feature various colors or departments each week for a 30 to 50 percent discount!  It pays to ask the employees when you enter the store or look throughout the store for their colorful signs, which list their current discounted items or tag colors.   Goodwill stores also will offer special discounts on holiday merchandise either before or after the holiday.  So, watch for those.

Senior Citizen Wednesdays

As much as it pains me, I am now eligible for many senior citizen discounts.  Every Wednesday Senior Citizens receive a 15% discount on their entire purchase at Goodwill.  Check your local Goodwill store for the age requirements and be sure to bring along your ID.  I'm 54 and my husband is 61.  I have been known to drag him along with me to shop because if I don't qualify for the discount, he often does.  Can I call that a Date Night??!!

Military Tuesdays

Goodwill likes to say "Thank you for your service" by offering a 15% discount to members of the military on Tuesdays.  Be sure to bring along identification which signifies your military status.

A Buck-Fifty Tuesday

I love it when my readers clue me in on great deals!  Anne, a faithful reader, messaged me this fantastic tip. "I’m not sure if this is at all Goodwill stores, but the one on Pioneer Parkway in Peoria has “Buck Fifty Tuesdays”. Most clothing is $1.50 per item on the last Tuesday of the month (such as today). This includes most tops, bottoms, dresses, and even coats!"

Thanks, Anne.  Wowzers!  That is a fantastic deal!  Those of you not in Central Illinois, check to see if this is also true of your Goodwill.

Your turn!

How do you rate your local Goodwill?  Is the staff friendly and the service good and the prices fair?  I'd love to hear your thoughts.  Leave a message in the comments section below.
